Jordan Montgomery in midst of breakout season

- The Yankees are doing a lot of things right. You don't have the record that they do without being good at everything. But the starting pitching hasn't gotten enough credit, and Jordan Montgomery has been a big part of that step this spring. In two starts in June, the southpaw has a 1.35 ERA over 13 in one third innings. He was dominant, with seven shutout innings Saturday in a victory over the Cubs.
The left hander has only picked up two wins on a year over his dozen starts. But a 2.7 ERA in a 0.98 whip, over 66 and 2/3 frames, a much more indicative of how he's pitched this year than the win loss record. Now, we've seen flashes of this type of stuff from Montgomery before, but never for this long. And the metrics suggest he's deserving of these results. His walk percent of 3.8 is among the very best in baseball, and he's getting hitters to swing at the pitches that aren't in the strike zone, as seen at a Chase rate that ranks in the 92nd percentile.
The 29-year-old hasn't piled up the strikeouts, but his whip rate is actually well above average. So if anything, he's been unlucky in that regard. He may not be an elite fantasy option, but Montgomery appears to be having a breakout season. And Fantasy managers should find a way to add him to their respective roster.
