Joseph Bryant Statue Removed from Richmond's Monroe Park

A statue of Joseph Bryan, a Confederate soldier and “Lost Cause” supporter, was removed from Monroe Park in Richmond, Virginia, on July 9, local reports said.

According to the Library of Virginia’s Dictionary of Virginia Biography, Bryan was a former slave owner, lawyer, newspaper publisher and industrialist who was vocally opposed to emancipation and reconstruction following the Civil War.

“At every opportunity he aided the commemoration of the Lost Cause and believed that trends following the Civil War proved the righteousness of the Confederacy,” said James M. Lindgren in the Dictionary of Virginia Biography.
