Josh Gad has given a disappointing update on Shrunk, the proposed reboot of the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids franchise.

Disney greenlit a third sequel to the original 1989 comedy back in 2019, with Gad reportedly playing the son of Rick Moranis' Wayne Szalinski, the scientist who inadvertently reduces his kids to 6mm in size.

Gad had offered a promising update earlier this year by revealing that he and Moranis, who has been in live-action retirement for 26 years, were collaborating in preparation for the film.

The latest update is far from ideal, however, with Gad tweeting that the project is now in limbo after multiple delays.

"A lot of you ask me what's going on with this film," he began. "Truth is, we were inches from starting and then COVID hit, inches from starting again and then my schedule exploded with conflicts, inches from starting again and budget got the best of us. If you want it, let your local @disney know."

Gad had reportedly developed the idea for the story himself, with Todd Rosenberg set to pen the script; original director Joe Johnston was also onboard with the project. The original film was followed by two sequels - Honey, I Blew Up the Kid and Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves - in 1992 and 1997 respectively.

The actor found fame with his role as Olaf in the Frozen franchise, and revealed he was "intimidated" at the prospect of recording new songs for the sequel.

"I was so intimidated with the cameras around. Because you feel so vulnerable, so when I was singing my song, and people are like, recording me... it was just so intimidating."

Frozen and Frozen 2 are streaming on Disney+. Tickets for the West End musical are available here.
