A new Indian spot has opened up shop in the neighborhood. Called Bikanervala, the new addition is located at 815 Newark Ave. in Journal Square.
This is the third U.S. location of the Delhi-based chain, which has outlets across Asia and in New Zealand but has so far limited its North American operations to New Jersey. Bikanervala specializes in traditional Indian sweets, baked goods and treats, and sells a wide array of barfi, laddu, cookies and namkeen (snacks). This counter-service spot also offers a full menu of curries, chaat and other lunch and dinner fare. Check out the chole bhature, a North Indian combination of chana masala and bhatura, or deep-fried bread.
With a 3.5-star rating out of three reviews on Yelp, Bikanervala is finding its way, but it's still early days.
Rachit G., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on Nov. 4, wrote, "Legit North Indian food! Dal makhani is amazing and so is the chole bhature. Trust me, a guy who was born and raised in Delhi. You gotta try it."
Meanwhile, Anuj J. noted, "Half the things on the menu were not available. Matra has too much masala and not enough lemon."
Interested? Bikanervala is open from 11 a.m.-9:30 p.m. on Sunday-Thursday and 11 a.m.-10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
