Journalist Martin Bashir, who conducted bombshell Princess Diana interview, ‘seriously unwell’ with COVID

Esteemed journalist Martin Bashir, whose bombshell 1995 interview with Princess Diana confirmed her and Prince Charles' mutual infidelity, is badly ill from the coronavirus.

“We are sorry to say that Martin is seriously unwell with COVID-19 related complications,” a BBC spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Currently BBC News' religion editor, the 57-year-old was a BBC News correspondent from 1987 to 1992. He then went on to join the network’s investigative documentary series, “Panorama," on which his Princess Diana interview was conducted.

During the interview, the Princess of Wales confessed that she had had an affair and said that her marriage to Prince Charles, which ended in divorce the following year, became “a bit crowded.”

“There were three of us in this marriage,” she said at the time, referring to the Prince of Wales' relationship with his now-wife Camilla Parker-Bowles, Duchess of Cornwall. “So it was a bit crowded.”

Bashir’s interview with the royal, who died in 1997, saw one of the network’s largest-ever audiences to date.

In addition to his Princess Diana interview, Bashir had notable interviews with the late Michael Jackson and suspects in the 1993 murder of Stephen Lawrence in southeast London.

Lawrence, a Black British teen, was fatally stabbed in a racially motivated attack.

Bashir, a former theology student, eventually went to work for ITV, before hosting ABC’s Nightline in the U.S. and working as an MSNBC anchor. He returned to the BBC in 2016 to cover religious affairs.

The BBC spokeswoman requested that Bashir’s “privacy, and that of his family, is respected at this time" and noted, “Everyone at the BBC is wishing him a full recovery.”
