Journalist Robert Costa leaving Washington Post for CBS News

Journalist Robert Costa is leaving The Washington Post for a job at CBS News, where he will cover national political campaigns and the midterm elections this year.

"My reporting will focus on the 2022 midterms, the 2024 election, and American democracy. Stay tuned for in-depth stories, scoops, investigations, and on-the-road reports," Costa said in a tweet announcing the news on Thursday morning.

Costa said he and CBS News president Neeraj Khemlani have had many conversations in recent months "about the necessity of reporting the fragile state of American democracy," and "the need to break important stories across CBS News' leading broadcast and streaming platforms ahead of 2022 midterms & 2024 election."

A high-profile reporter and political analyst at The Washington Post since 2014, Costa has covered virtually every major political story in the U.S. for the newspaper during those years.

Earlier this year, he and veteran reporter Bob Woodward co-authored a book about the last few months of the 2020 presidential campaign and former President Trump's final weeks in office, called "Peril."

Among the headlines the book generated was an account from the two reporters that revealed Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley called his Chinese counterparts after the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol.

Earlier this month, the Post lost David Fahrenthold, the reporter who broke the story revealing the "Access Hollywood" tape during Trump's first campaign and has since been one of the leading journalists covering the former president's businesses, to its top competitor The New York Times.

CBS News earlier this week announced a number of changes to its senior leadership team in Washington, D.C., as it looks to solidify its resources in the nation's capital ahead of the 2022 midterms.
