BENTON HARBOR — The Economic Club of Southwestern Michigan presents a talk by Wil Haygood at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 19 at Lake Michigan College’s Mendel Center, 2755 E. Napier Ave.

Titled “Colorization: One Hundred Years of Black Films in a White World,” Haygood’s talk will look at the history of Black cinema, examining 100 years of Black movies — from “Gone With the Wind” to Blaxploitation films to “Black Panther” — using the struggles and triumphs of the artists and the films themselves as a prism to explore Black culture, civil rights and racism.

A best-selling author, prize-winning journalist, biographer and cultural historian, Haygood tells the story of America through the lens of history, politics, sports, race and the lives of change-making African-Americans.

His books include “The Butler” and “Showdown,” and his work has chronicled America’s civil rights journey through biographies of Thurgood Marshall, Adam Clayton Powell Jr., Sammy Davis Jr., Sugar Ray Robinson and Eugene Allen, the real-life inspiration for Lee Daniels’ award-winning film, “The Butler.”

For thirty years, he was a national and foreign correspondent for the Washington Post and Boston Globe, where he was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.

Tickets are $60-$30.

High school and college students are invited to attend a free Student Q&A session with Haygood at 6:25 p.m. Registration is strongly encouraged at themendelcenter.com/events.
