Providence Journal sports writer Bill Koch has won the Rhode Island Sports Writer of the Year award from the National Sports Media Association.

A Warwick native and resident, and graduate of Boston University, Koch has now won the honor four times. He has worked at The Journal since 2014 and previously worked at the South County Independent and Woonsocket Call newspapers.

"I'm humbled by the award, but that's not why I do this," he said. "I genuinely enjoy my job and if I didn't, I wouldn't be doing it for the last two decades."

Nick Coit, of WLNE-TV (Channel 6) was named the Rhode Island Sportscaster of the Year, also for the fourth time.

National winners include CBS Sports’ Ian Eagle, the 2022 national sportscaster of the year, and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic and Pete Thamel of ESPN.com, the 2022 co-national sports writers of the year.

ESPN College GameDay mainstay Lee Corso and Los Angeles Times sports columnist Bill Plaschke, are among four media members elected to the National Sports Media Association Hall of Fame, NSMA executive director Dave Goren announced this week. Corso and Plaschke are joined by two posthumous electees, legendary hockey announcer Dan Kelly and essayist Roger Angell.

According to its website, the National Sports Media Association seeks to develop educational opportunities for those who are interested in pursuing a career in sports media, through networking, interning, mentoring, and scholarship programs. The organization also honors, preserves, and celebrates the diverse legacy of sports media in the United States. Founded in 1959 as the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association in Salisbury, N.C., the NSSA added its Hall of Fame in 1962, with Grantland Rice as its first member. The organization rebranded to the National Sports Media Association in 2016 and moved to Winston-Salem, N.C. one year later.

The NSMA will honor its winners and Hall of Fame inductees during the organization’s 63rd awards weekend and national convention, scheduled for June 24-26, 2023, in Winston-Salem, N.C.
