JPBL prepping future Patriots with skills camp

If you look to the high school level of basketball at Owen Valley, most of the team members on both the girls' and boys' squads are former Junior Patriot Basketball League (JPBL) players.

As summer rages on, JPBL looks to continue its support of basketball in the area and help build players for the future.

According to board member Kirby Brown, this season brings some exciting changes.

"The JPBL Board is focused on providing a fun recreational league for the youth of our community while still providing opportunities for development for any kids who wish to pursue basketball into Junior High, High School, and beyond," Brown said. "With that goal in mind we are excited to announce the addition of our new "5 for 5" Skills Program for 5-year-olds, which will focus on a fun and exciting introduction to the game of basketball for our youngest future Patriots!"

Participants in this program will learn the rules of the game, ball handling, basic shooting, passing and defensive position.

"This will open up our 'Biddy Ball' program (ages 6-7) to become more instructional with more games and additional practices than in previous years," Brown explained.

In the meantime, with the focus on providing opportunities for development, the league is hosting its second annual fundamentals camp, June 27-29. Owen Valley Grad, Harry Marshall will be leading the camp this year and all sessions will be held at the Owen Valley Middle School Gym.

The third and fourth grade session is from 5:30-7 p.m. with the fifth and sixth grade session from 7-8:30 p.m.

In addition JPBL will be hosting open gyms throughout the rest of the summer at McCormick's Creek Elementary.

  • Tuesdays- 6p-7:30p - Boys grades 3rd-6th

  • Wednesdays- 5p-6:30p- Girls grades 3rd-6th

  • Fridays- 5p-6:30p- Girls grades 5th-6th

Another bit of big news for JPBL in 2022, the league will be returning to Spencer Elementary School in 2022-2023 for the games.

"We would also like to thank the schools of the Spencer Owen Community School Corporation who have been so supportive to allow us gym time to provide these offerings," Brown noted.
