A Gadsden native recently was named interim dean of Jacksonville State University’s College of Business and Industry.

Dr. Brent Cunningham was named on Jan. 3 to the position, where he will serve until a new dean is found.

Cunningham was born in Gadsden, according to JSU officials, but his family moved away as a youngster and he is a graduate of Union City High School in Tennessee. However, he still has relatives in the Gadsden area, according to university officials.

He is a JSU alumnus, receiving a Bachelor of Science in marketing in 1987. He received a master’s degree from the University of Alabama in 1990 and earned a Ph. D. in marketing from the University of Mississippi in 1999.

Cunningham began his academic career in Jackson, Tennessee, in 1990 as a member of the marketing faculty at Union University.

He started working for JSU in 1999 as an assistant professor of marketing. In 2012, he was promoted to full professor, and was named head of the Department of Management and Marketing in 2018 after serving as an interim head of the department for a year prior.
