Judge convicts man of robbing Norfolk Rite Aid cashier at gunpoint

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A man just convicted of robbing a Norfolk Rite Aid at gunpoint back in 2022 made it easy for police to identify him during the course of the investigation.

On Thursday, a judge convicted 34-year-old Elbert Chauncey Massie Jr. of armed robbery and the use of a firearm in the commission of robbery.

The crime happened on June 23, 2022. Massie entered the Rite Aid located at 7601 Granby St. and tried to buy a tobacco product, but didn’t have his ID.

He left the store and returned with both his ID and a bag he had not been previously holding.

During the transaction, Massie pulled out a gun and demanded all the cash from the register. The cashier handed over the money and Massie left.

Police were able to quickly identify Massie as the suspect because the cashier had scanned his ID.

“Store clerks work long hours for low pay. They deserve to be safe, and they do not deserve to have people pull guns on them and rob them,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi. “We will continue to prosecute the people who commit these violent crimes in our community.”

Massie is scheduled for sentencing on May 31.
