Judge finds Newberg school board members violated public meetings law

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A new opinion by a Yamhill County judge found members of the Newberg school board did meet in private in August 2021, in violation of public meetings law.

According to the opinion from Circuit Court Judge Cynthia Easterday, the goal of these private meetings was to prepare to hire an attorney who was aligned with their legal objectives.

Those meetings came around the same time members put in place a policy that banned district staff from displaying symbols, including pride flags and “Black Lives Matter” flags.

Judge Easterday had also heard a separate lawsuit over this ban, where she ruled it unconstitutional in September 2022.
