Judge orders Ex-Penn State president Graham Spanier to report to jail May 1

Former Penn State president Graham Spanier’s jail time is quickly approaching.

On Wednesday, a judge ordered Spanier to report to jail on May 1 for his 2017 conviction on child endangerment charges. Spanier was convicted for his role in failing to report a sexual abuse allegation against former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

The former defensive coordinator is currently serving what’s essentially a lifetime prison sentence on numerous sexual abuse charges.

Spanier was sentenced to two months in jail and two months of house arrest nearly two years ago. He has been out on bail and had appealed his sentence to the Pennsylvania state Supreme Court after his sentence was upheld.

The high court declined to hear Spanier’s appeal in February, which was centered on the statute of limitations in the case relating to the identity of one of Sandusky’s victims.

The location of Spanier’s jail confinement will depend on the approval of jail officials. From the AP:

Judge John Boccabella said Spanier may do his time in the jail near his home in State College if county jail wardens approve. If not, he has to report to the Dauphin County Prison in Harrisburg. The judge also gave his approval for Spanier to participate in a work-release program.

Spanier was removed as Penn State’s president in November of 2011 and was initially indicted on eight charges. The school’s former vice president and athletic director testified against him at his trial after agreeing to guilty pleas with prosecutors on child endangerment charges.
