A man whose money was stolen from his vehicle after he visited a Cedar Park bank shot one of the suspects in a car chase, police said Tuesday. Police were able to find both suspects and recover all of the victim's money, officials said.

Cedar Park police were alerted after the victim called them at 4:10 p.m. Monday saying he was following the car of the people who had stolen money from him near the intersection of South Lakeline Boulevard and Cypress Creek Road, officials said in a news release.

The victim said he withdrew money from a bank at FM 1431 and U.S. 183 in Cedar Park and then drove to a gas station in Lago Vista, police said. While he was inside the gas station, someone broke his car window, stole the money and then escaped in another vehicle, the release said.

It said the victim found the suspects driving on Lakeline Boulevard and tried to pull in front of their car to stop it. The suspects displayed a gun, so the victim pulled his own gun and fired into the car, striking the driver in the mouth, the release said. The victim also shot at the vehicle before it drove away, according to police.

"A short time later, Cedar Park Regional Medical Center called reporting someone had come into the hospital with a gunshot wound," the news release said. "It appears the injured driver drove to the hospital while a male passenger left the area on foot."

Police later found out the passenger took a Lyft ride from Cedar Park to Houston, the release said. The Houston Police Department's violent crimes task force was able to stop the Lyft vehicle, arrest the suspect and recover the money, police said. Police have not released the names of the people who were arrested.

The man whose money was stolen was a victim of a crime known as "jugging" that occurs when thieves follow a person who has just withdrawn money from a bank and then steal the money when the victim stops elsewhere, police said.
