Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s COVID-19 PSA Hilariously Highlights the Importance of Beauty Professionals

By now, we know that those flawless celebrity looks are the result of teams of people behind the scenes. Glam squads are what keep stars full-time fabulous, but since the COVID-19 crisis and subsequent social isolation measures, staying indoors takes priority, no matter the cost to one’s appearance. Yesterday on Instagram, that fact was illustrated hilariously by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, the always funny star of Veep and Seinfeld. In a PSA encouraging Californians to remain in their home to flatten the virus’s curve, Louis-Dreyfus showed just what happens when beauty professionals are missing from the picture. “Normally, when I do a PSA like this, I have a hair and makeup team,” she said while smearing red lipstick beyond the boundaries of her mouth. “But today they’re staying at home, they’re staying safe, [and] that’s what I would like to ask you to do.”

California’s stay-at-home order has been in effect since March 19th, when Governor Gavin Newsom ordered all nonessential businesses to close their doors. With the majority state’s 40 million residents now indoors, they—along with many other parts of the world—have had to give up life’s little luxuries. Sure, a lack of access to manicurists, makeup artists, and hair salons results in plenty of lousy contouring moments and regrettable at-home dye jobs, but it also threatens the financial stability for those who work in the beauty industry, especially freelancers. While at home, many industry pros are channeling their creativity into social media transformations, or live-streamed tutorials, but the future is uncertain.

Louis-Dreyfus’s playful PSA offers a humorous twist on everything that can go wrong when you can’t outsource your beauty routine, but it also serves as a reminder. Right now, the best path forward is staying at home and learning to DIY, but when a sense of normalcy does return, nothing beats being able to rely on the professionals. Try as she may, Louis-Dreyfus is probably won’t match the skills of her regular makeup artist, Karen Kawahara, which is totally fine given the hilarity her attempts at getting glam have provided.
