Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman officially announced his retirement from football.
- It is the end of another era in Foxborough.
- Julian Edelman just announced that he's retiring from the Patriots after more than a decade on the team. This is part of the video that he just put out. WBZ's sports director Steve Burton is here with the breaking details. Steve?
STEVE BURTON: All right, guys. Thank you very much. You know, you had a feeling this was coming. After 12 years with the Patriots, Julian Edelman has announced he is walking away from the game he loves. This coming after the Patriots terminated his contract this afternoon after a failed physical.
Now, Edelman was the heart and soul of the Patriots receiving corps. He spent 12 years with the Pats and was a three-time Super Bowl champion, the MVP of Super Bowl LIII. Clutch plays, he had a ton of them in the biggest games when the clock was winding down. But the failed physical should not come as any big surprise. Edelman played just six games last year after coming off knee surgery.
Now, Edelman will go down as one of the Pats' greatest receivers. Get his red jacket ready, I'll tell you that right now, for the Patriots Hall of Fame and hopefully a gold jacket for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, too. Guys?
- All right, Steve. Thank you.
