Fresh from Rio de Janeiro’s biggest celebration of the year, Juliana Paes is feeling a little worse for wear. Not that you can tell. “I’m excited to get started because, as you can see, I am drained from Carnaval,” says the Brazilian actress, even though her bare complexion is as luminous as ever.

The 40-year-old mother of two is sharing the secrets behind her signature bombshell makeup look—from humidity-proof coverage to taming her preternaturally thick brows—and she’s doing so the only way she knows how. “I am going to do an ‘everyday’ makeup look,” explains Paes. “A basic look, but for me nothing ends up being basic because I love makeup.”

In her tropical hometown, Nars’s creamy Velvet Matte Foundation Stick is her secret weapon for a glowing, second-skin veil that doesn’t move, despite Rio’s humid elements. Zeroing in on her under-eye area, she carefully blends concealer on the inner corners, adding dustings of Laura Mercier’s brightening Translucent Loose Setting Powder to keep everything intact. “I think the Carnaval eye bags have improved!” she observes delightedly. Tending to her thick arches, she administers hairlike strokes of Anastasia Beverly Hills’s Brow Wiz Mechanical Brow Pencil before brushing them through for a feathered effect. “You know what’s a good trick when you have hairy brows?” she poses. “Go into your boyfriend’s drawer and grab his hair wax. Then grab [a spoolie brush], rub it on the wax, and brush it after a wild night when you want to put everything back into place.”

After contouring her eye sockets and encasing her gaze in a striking deep crimson eyeshadow, she sweeps a sculpting powder along the cheekbones and hairline for an all-over chiseled effect. “For every role I play, I end up doing the makeup,” she says. “I love doing it so much. For me, it’s a method of getting into character.” Last up, it’s lips and lashes. For the former, she traces her natural lip line with a pencil (“Don’t skip the liner, it changes everything!” she insists) before painting on a dusty-rose liquid lip shade. For the latter, it’s all about layering on Sisley Paris’s So Volume Voluminizing Fortifying Mascara and whipping out a set of false eyelashes that will take her fringe to eye-popping new lengths.

“I think I told you it was [going to be] a ‘basic’ look, no?” she giggles. “I did, huh. But I really can’t do that, guys. That’s it. I’m ready to go pick up the kids from school.” Signing off in characteristically fierce fashion, Paes all but confirms she is the ultimate cool mom.
