The first trailer for upcoming queer period drama Mary & George has arrived, starring Julianne Moore and Nicholas Galitzine.

Adapted from Benjamin Woolley's The King's Assassin, the miniseries tells the real-life story of Mary Villiers (Moore), a 17th century social climber who used everything in her power to conquer the English royal court.

Mary's schemes included encouraging her son George (played by Red, White and Royal Blue's Galitzine) to seduce King James I (of England, James VI of Scotland), earning him the title of the Duke of Buckingham.

In the steamy trailer we see the ambitious mother and son arrive at the King's court, with Mary determined to place her son in the King's line of sight no matter the cost.

"Have you found me a wife yet," George asks in one clip, to which his mother replies: "I think we aim higher."

Elsewhere we see several x-rated scenes between George and King James (played by Doctor Who's Tony Curran) as Mary's schemes to dominate the English royal court are laid bare.

"If I were a man and I looked like you, I'd rule the f**king planet," she tells her son in another clip as the pair move closer to the core of English society.

Joining Curran, Moore and Galitzine are an ensemble cast including: Mark O'Halloran (Brassic) who plays as Sir Francis Bacon, and Nicola Walker (The Split, Marriage) and Adrian Rawlins (Harry Potter's James Potter) as husband-and-wife Sir Edward Cooke and Mary Hatton.

Mary & George will premiere in 2024 on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW in UK and on STARZ in the US.
