Julius owner Reyes working on outdoor market to feature Mexican street food in Maennerchor Plaza
Julius, the restaurant owned by Julio Reyes in the former Maennerchor building, 1607 State St., is gearing up for an outdoors project serving Mexico City street food in the Maennnerchor Plaza, probably opening a courtyard there with a new mural in late May, according to Reyes.
Check out the Facebook post at facebook.com/latinosrb for the complete menu, including Antoitos Mexicanos ($5) including 11 classics such as sopes, gorditas, quesadillas, tostadas and more; Tacos de Guisados ($5) such as picadillo, chicharron, papas (potatoes) con chorizo (spicy sausage), huevos (eggs) con chorizo (spicy sausage) and more. Meanwhile, Reyes will be serving specials on Cinco de Mayo (May 5), which takes place next Thursday, and he is planning a Mother's Day Brunch on May 8, starting at 10 a.m. Make reservations by calling 814-315-9311.

Altered State partners with festival
Altered State Distillery, 1535 W. Eighth St., is working with the Fire Lights Music & Arts Festival scheduled Aug. 12-14 in Edinboro, according to its Facebook page. Altered State is hosting the festival acts throughout the spring and summer and giving away three sets of two weekend passes to the festival. They're also straight-up selling tickets. You can enter the drawing by visiting the Facebook page, liking it, reacting to the post about the festival and sharing the post. Entrants must be 21. Acts include Phunkademic, Eric Brewer & Friends, RootsCollider, Rizm, OMENZ DUBZ, Cold Lazarus, eberwine and Land of Panda.
Chippers returns to regular hours
Chippers Seafood and Southern Fusion, 1023 State St., was closed for a few weeks, but is now back to its regular hours, listed on Facebook as Tuesdays through Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Fridays, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturdays, noon to 8 p.m.; and Sundays 2 to 8 p.m.

Vilma's open for takeout
Vilma's Kitchen, 2825 Raspberry St., is open for takeout. The restaurant, licensed in December but just recently opened, serves Puerto Rican and American food Thursdays through Fridays, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sundays, noon to 6 p.m. Their menu is listed on their Facebook page, and the phone number is 814-315-4133.
Khao Thai owners seek buyer
Khao Thai, which has reported being close to the end, reached out on Facebook to clarify a few points this week.
"As many of you now know, we have made the decision to close our business," the owners' statement reads. "This has NOTHING to do with our move to (West Eighth Street). If we were still downtown we probably wouldn’t have made it long into the pandemic.
"We’re ready to retire and relax, and with being short-staffed that doesn’t seem to be possible while remaining in business. We are very hopeful that we can find someone to either take over Khao Thai, or at least start their own restaurant in this location. We are very proud of what we’ve done with the spot & our business has been FANTASTIC at this new location."
Blueberry Pie Day
It's National Blueberry Pie Day on Thursday, as well as National Stop Food Waste Day. I think those pair together quite nicely. Blueberry pie should never go to waste. If you're feeling the need for a slice of blueberry pie, stop by Art's Bakery, 4380 West Ridge Road, where owner Gordon Evans assured me they'd have some. If you're wondering why on Earth blueberry pie would land on this seemingly random day, it's actually the beginning of the season for some varieties of the popular berry, according to bit.ly/blueberrypieday.

Cloud 9 Wine Bar & Restaurant, 25 E. 10th St., is offering a Mother's Day brunch May 8. Seatings at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. are still available. Adults cost $40. Children 5-10 are $15, and 5 and younger free.
Beechwood Inn's Hardwood Grille, 4102 West Lake Road, has a tempting Taco Tuesday menu that caught my eye. Six kinds served each for $7-$15. It's hard to beat if you're looking to board the Tuesday Taco train. (No, that doesn't really exist. But it seems like it should.)
