July 4 parade a success, fireworks postponed due to weather

Monday, July 4 in Alamogordo began with a parade down 10th Street between Oregon Avenue and New York Avenue and ended with the postponement of the annual fireworks display due to a thunderstorm.

The July 4 Parade was organized by the Alamogordo Center of Commerce this year and entrants included the Otero County Fair and Rodeo queens, Rotary Club of Alamogordo, Holloman Air Force Base, various candidates for the general election in November and Alamogordo High School Air Force Junior ROTC.

The weather was hot at 93 degrees with clear to partly cloudy skies that gave way to monsoonal thunderstorms at nightfall. The thunderstorms required the annual fireworks display to be postponed until 9:15 p.m. July 5.

The fireworks will launch from the grounds of the New Mexico Museum of Space History, which makes them viewable from almost anywhere in the city.
