Get a jump on spring cleaning at Calhoun County Recycling events

Calhoun County Recycling is helping residents get a jump on spring cleaning.

There will be opportunities to get rid of electronics, scrap metal, appliances, scrap tires and household hazardous waste during upcoming collection events in Battle Creek, Albion and Marshall.

The events are free and limited to material generated by Calhoun County residents. Participants are asked to remain in their vehicles.

Battle Creek

To avoid causing traffic congestion, residents are asked to enter the Bailey Park complex via Wagner Drive off of Emmett Street for Monday's recycling event.

Electronics, scrap metal and household hazardous waste items will be collected from noon to 5:30 p.m. Monday (April 24) at Bailey Park, 1350 Capital Ave. NE.

To avoid causing traffic congestion, residents are asked to enter the Bailey Park complex via Wagner Drive off of Emmett Street.

The following items will be accepted:

Scrap Metal — stoves, washers, dryers, dishwashers, lawn mowers (remove fuel), metal patio furniture, metal railings, sheet metal, rims (no tires), metal fencing, metal doors, metal pipes, and bike frames.

The following items with refrigerant will be accepted — refrigerators, mini-fridges, freezers, AC units, dehumidifiers, and water coolers.

Electronics — stereo equipment, DVD and VHS players, projectors, gaming consoles, computers, laptops, Chromebooks, LCD and CRT computer monitors, keyboards, mice, speakers, scanners, servers, switches, routers, cellphones, iPads and tablets, iPods and MP3 players, e-readers, printers, floor copiers, fax machines, copy machines, televisions (LCD, plasma, projection, and CRT), microwaves, toasters, blenders, mixers, vacuums, lead-acid batteries, power tools (including their rechargeable batteries), cameras, electronic toys, Christmas lights and wires and cords from electronic devices.

Household Hazardous Waste — oil-based paint, fuels (in fuel cans), solvents, acids, bases, pesticides, household cleaners, mercury, medications, sharps (inside rigid puncture resistant container w/lid), household batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze, propane cylinders, gas cylinders (no foam insulation), fire extinguishers, aerosol cans, PCB and non-PCB lamp ballasts, oxidizers, self-heating solids, flammable solids/liquids, toxic inorganics/organics, lighters, chlorophenols, lead, self-defense spray, peroxides, water-reactives, isocyanates, and cyanide.

Not accepted: latex paint, school chemicals, biologically active material, home-use insulation spraying cylinders, ammunitions, weapons, explosives, and radioactive material (includes smoke detectors). Household hazardous waste collections do not include trash, tires, yard waste, construction/demolition waste, or industrial/business-generated waste.

Albion

The following items will be accepted:

Scrap Tires — Passenger vehicle tires with or without rims will be accepted; due to lacing requirements, the number of tires with rims may be limited due to available space in semi-trailer. No tires larger than semi-truck tires will be unloaded. Collection may end early if the trailer is full. EGLE Scrap Tire Grant rules limit the number of scrap tires brought by a resident to 10 scrap tires. The event is limited to household and residential scrap tires only. No business or farm tires will be accepted.

Marshall

Household hazardous waste will be collected from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. May 22 at the Calhoun County Fairgrounds.
