June 16 amateur baseball roundup: Winner/Colome smashes its way to Sunshine League win at Parkston

Jun. 17—PARKSTON — Winner/Colome remained perfect on the amateur baseball season with a big offensive showing on Thursday night, picking up 18 hits in a 13-2 seven-inning win over Parkston on Thursday night at The Pond.

Austin Richey had a home run and drove in four runs in the game, with Chandler Bakley finishing with four hits and driving in three runs. Reed Harter had three hits, including two doubles and three runs scored, while Derek Graesser, Austin Calhoon and Zach Harter each had two hits in the win, with Calhoon scoring three times. Tarell Bauld allowed six hits in his seven innings of work, with five strikeouts and two runs allowed.

Jeff Harris had two doubles for the Mudcats and drove in a run, while Dillon Stadlman drove in the other run for Parkston. Jake Weber was the losing pitcher for the Mudcats, with 15 hits and 10 runs allowed in 5 2/3 innings and four strikeouts.

Both teams will head to the Cornbelt/Sunshine Showdown this weekend. Winner/Colome (10-0, 5-0 Sunshine) will play Canova on Friday in Humboldt, while Parkston (3-8, 1-5 Sunshine) will take on Lennox on Sunday.

CORSICA — Matt Wilber had three home runs and drove in 10 RBIs in a seven-inning victory for Alexandria in Sunshine League play on Thursday.

Wilber had a grand slam in the first inning to right field and three-run home runs to right field in the fourth and fifth innings. Jacob Giles, Pierce Smith, Jordan Gau and Aaron Wenande each had three hits to help Alexandria bang out 24 hits as a team. Giles finished with a home run, four runs scored and had four RBIs. Jerrod Zens had a home run and Peyton Smith had a pair of doubles. Ethan Davis earned the win on the mound for Alexandria, six innings allowed with three runs and five hits allowed and nine strikeouts. Giles threw a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh to close out the game.

Corsica/Stickney scored all of its runs on a three-run home run from Aaron Groeneweg in the third inning. Nathan Blom was the losing pitcher after a five-inning start with 16 hits and 13 runs (eight earned) allowed.

Both teams are in action in the Cornbelt/Sunshine Showdown this weekend in Humboldt. Alexandria (5-3, 3-2 Sunshine) takes on the Dell Rapids Mudcats on Sunday, while Corsica/Stickney (5-5, 2-4 Sunshine) takes on Salem on Friday.

PLANKINTON — A 20-strikeout, complete-game effort from Travis Gant powered the Plankinton Bankers to a win in the Battle of Plankinton on Thursday night over the Gold Sox in Pony Hills League action.

Gant threw 126 pitches and 83 for strikes. He allowed just one hit, as the Gold Sox' Ben Laufman's single in the second inning was the lone offensive tally against Gant.

Cole Knippling had a pair of hits for the Bankers, who got both of their runs on sacrifice flies. In the third inning, Preston Kristensen had a triple and was knocked in by Alex Loes' RBI sacrifice fly and the Bankers got a run in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly from Josh Engquist, scoring Josh Geppert.

Devin Mehlhaff was solid on the mound for the Gold Sox, with six hits and one run allowed and eight strikeouts in six innings.

The Bankers (6-0, 6-0 Pony Hills) play at Wessington Springs on Sunday, June 19, while the Gold Sox (2-7, 2-5 Pony Hills) play at Kimball/White Lake on June 23.

MOUNT VERNON — Platte's Grant Doom had 14 strikeouts to hold Mount Vernon in check for a Sunshine League amateur baseball win on Thursday night. A six-run seventh inning for Platte broke open what was a 2-all tie on the scoreboard to that point.

Doom allowed seven hits, two runs (one earned) with one walk on 135 pitches. Myles Kott threw the ninth inning to close the win for Platte. On offense, Sheldon Gant had three hits, with Hunter Hewitt picking up a home run and two RBIs for the Killer Tomatoes, while Ryan Allen drove in a pair of runs and Derek Soukup and Hayden Kuiper each had two hits for Platte.

Briggs Havlik and Eric Giblin each had RBIs in the loss for the Mustangs, with Cameron Deinert and Giblin each picking up two of the team's eight hits. Deric Denning was the losing pitcher despite 11 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings with nine hits and eight runs (seven earned) and four walks.

Both teams will be playing at the Cornbelt/Sunshine Showdown this weekend in Humboldt. Platte (5-1, 3-1 Sunshine) will take on Hartford/Humboldt Gamecocks on Saturday, while Mount Vernon (6-4, 2-2 Sunshine) will take on Flandreau on Sunday.

DELL RAPIDS — Salem scored 11 runs in the seventh inning to earn a run-rule victory over Cornbelt League rival Dell Rapids PBR on Thursday night. Salem trailed 2-1 after two innings before taking a 6-3 lead into the seventh inning when the Cubs exploded on offense.

Cole Cheeseman had three hits, with Avery Feterl adding two hits and two RBIs for Salem, which ahd 14 hits. Tyler Earls, who had three RBIs, was the winning pitcher for the Cubs, throwing all seven innings with six strikeouts and 11 hits allowed. Kyle Tuschen also drove in a pair of runs.

Tanner Solberg was the losing pitcher for PBR (2-7 Cornbelt) with five strikeouts in six innings of work.

Salem (3-6, 3-5 Cornbelt) plays on Friday, June 17 at the Cornbelt/Sunshine Showdown in Humboldt against Corsica/Stickney.

COLOME — Colome picked up a home Pony Hills League win on Thursday night, topping rival South Central in seven innings.

Kelly O'Bryan was the winning pitcher for the Chaos, allowing four runs on five hits in seven innings, striking out 12. At the plate, O'Bryan had three hits and drove in three runs, as Jason Frasch also drove in three for Colome in the victory. Colome was aided by five South Central errors in the win.

Jayd VanDerWerff took the loss for South Central, throwing 3 2/3 innings with seven hits and 11 runs allowed, but only two of them were earned and four strikeouts. Hunter Van Niewenhuyse and Christian Schweigert each had two hits in the loss.

Colome (4-4, 4-2 Pony Hills) travels to Four Corners on Sunday, June 19, while South Central (3-6, 3-3 Pony Hills) is in action on Sunday, June 19 at Kimball/White Lake.

CHAMBERLAIN — With 16 hits, Chamberlain had the offense to get past Wessington Springs in a Pony Hills League contest on Thursday night.

Trailing 6-3 going to the bottom of the sixth inning, Chamberlain scored seven runs to take control of the contest. Adam Schroeder, Evan Steiner and Ryan Randall each had two RBIs, with Mike Schwartz and Matt Hilson each picking up three hits. Steiner started on the mound with five hits and three runs allowed over 4 2/3 innings and striking out eight, and Schwartz earned the win in relief with six strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings.

Terrel Butterfield was the losing pitcher for the Owls, allowing 10 runs and 15 hits in six innings, striking out six. Butterfield, Dalton Mogck and Trevor Kenobbie each had two hits, with Mogck and Kenobbie had two RBIs.

Chamberlain (2-4, 2-4 Pony Hills) will host Four Corners on June 23, while Wessington Springs (0-7, 0-7 Pony Hills) hosts Plankinton on June 19.

TABOR — Lesterville improved to 6-0 in South Central League play and spoiled the annual Czech Days baseball game for Tabor on Thursday night.

Brandon Nickolite was the winning pitcher for the Broncs, allowing 11 hits and striking out four. Ethan Wishon had three RBIs, with Andy Dollarschell and Tanner VanDriel each driving in a pair of runs for Lesterville.

Zach Sutera drove in a pair of runs for Tabor, which finished with five runs. Chase Kortan had three strikeouts in as many innings for the Bluebirds on the mound.

Lesterville plays at Yankton on Sunday, June 19, while Tabor (2-3 SCL) is off until they host Wynot (Neb.) on June 26.
