June 28 Bike to Work Day almost here: Get free food in Fort Collins, free beer in Windsor

Fill your water bottle, hitch up the Burley and get ready to pedal for free stuff. It's almost summer Bike to Work (or Wherever) Day in and around Fort Collins.

The Wednesday, June 28, version of the statewide event, meant to encourage commuters to ditch their cars and take advantage of the area's many paved trails and bike lanes, will be full of freebies for those who venture out. Here's a quick look at some of the highlights and where to learn more about this summer tradition.

What to know about Summer Bike to Work (or Wherever) Day in Fort Collins

Grease your gears, because you'll need to be moving to make the most of Fort Collins' planned 80 stations. Ranging from a Martin Marietta-sponsored station on the Poudre Trail in northwest Fort Collins to Redeemer Lutheran Church's station off Carpenter Road, the stations vary widely in location and sponsor.

If you want to hit the highest concentration of stations, Old Town will be your best bet, with more than 20 stations in a matter of blocks.

Stations will be open from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m., with a smaller number of afternoon stations open from 4 to 6 p.m. A ceremony on the lawn at Foothills mall is planned for 9:45 to10:15 a.m.

According to the city, you can expect free breakfast, while supplies last, at most stations, with various giveaways, bike tech stations and activities at others. Just make sure to mind your road rules and trail etiquette, as bicyclists of all experience levels and abilities will be out and about Wednesday morning.

CSU Oval station seeks to serve more than 1,200 riders

Colorado State University's popular stop on the Oval, just north of the Administration Building, will be open from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. Free items there include Silver Grill cinnamon rolls, LaMar's donuts, Milo's tea, Momo Lolo coffee, fruit from Edge Optics, Morning Fresh Dairy products and breakfast burritos and churros, according to a university release. The Spoke will provide free bike adjustments.

Free beer in Windsor, while it lasts, and more

Here's the headline for cyclists age 21 or older in Windsor: The first 25 cyclists who visit High Hops Brewery, 6461 Colorado Highway 392, for a happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m. will receive a free beer. Those who arrive later can still get a half-price beer, so be safe, not in a rush. The station will also have limited-edition cycling caps and a bicycle trivia challenger.

Earlier in the day, Windsor's Bike to Breakfast stop will be open from 6 to 8 a.m. outside Spokes Bike Shop, 427 Main St. State Farm Insurance agent Heidi Washburn will provide breakfast burritos, while the city of Greeley will provide Bike to Work Day T-shirts.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., stop by the Market Pavilion at Boardwalk Community Park for a frozen treat and No. 2 Ditch Trail T-shirt.

Finally, from 6 to 8 p.m., Windsor Police and the Windsor Optimist Club will hold a bike night with helmet and bicycle safety checks, a cone course, helmet giveaway and more at the Windsor High School west parking lot, 1100 Main St.

Loveland plans 'Everybody Bike Day'

Loveland will also get in on the action with Everybody Bike Day on Wednesday. The city lists 13 morning stations, 10 afternoon stations and one all-day station on its station map, with activities planned at morning stations from 6:30 to 9 a.m. and afternoon stations from 4 to 6:30 p.m.
