Looking for a way to celebrate Juneteenth? We've got a round up of events around the Columbus area.
Juneteenth is recognized annually on the June 19. Here's why and how the Columbus area is celebrating.
What is Juneteenth?
Formally titled Juneteenth National Independence Day, the holiday commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.
Though former President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, news of the signing didn't reach Galveston, Texas, until June 19, 1865. Upon receiving the news, Galveston's freed slaves broke into celebration.
Since then, people elsewhere in Texas and all throughout the United States have begun celebrating the abolishment of slavery on June 19. Juneteenth was officially declared a federal holiday in 2021.
