Junior League of Reading serves Olivet Clubs' Oakbrook kids and families an early Thanksgiving dinner

Nov. 23—The children of Olivet Boys & Girls Clubs' Oakbrook location enjoyed an early Thanksgiving meal.

Volunteers from the Junior League of Reading cooked and served a family-style meal last week for about 150 kids and their parents.

Junior League volunteers prepared, delivered and served turkeys, hams and all the sides and desserts that go with the traditional Thanksgiving meal.

In addition to the standard turkey and pumpkin pie, the meal included Spanish rice and a few kid-friendly extras, such as macaroni and cheese.

The event gives parents an opportunity to interact with their children at the club facility. After dinner, the children and their families played games, decorated pumpkins and worked on other crafts.

The annual sit-down meal resumed last year after transitioning to take-out only during the height of the COVID pandemic.

Started by the club in 2010, the annual pre-Thanksgiving meal has grown over the years and remains popular with club members, their families and Junior League volunteers.
