Junior Nursing Academy returns to WVU Tech’s campus

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — The Southern West Virginia Junior Nursing Academy, hosted by the West Virginia University School of Nursing will be opening for a day camp.

Water Development Authority approves over $19 million for economic projects

The day camp will be held on WVU Tech`s campus and be from August 13, 2024 to August 14, 2024. This day camp will let participants and attendees experience what it is like to be a college nursing student.

This program will also provide students visits to two local hospitals, show them how to take vitals in a medical setting, and give them a better understanding of the nursing and medical field. Professional mentors will also be paired with students to help guide and teach them.

Hillary Parcell, Assistant Professor and Department Chair of the WVU School of Nursing Beckley Campus, expresses how she wants the camp to talk about the nursing shortage and to help guide students so that they may be better prepared in the field.

“We enjoy hosting this camp for southern West Virginia because it is such a great hands-on opportunity to expose young minds to the profession of nursing,” says Parcell.

Although there is no cost to attend the camp, there are limited spots available. Students wanting to participate in this program must have at least a 3.0 grade point average and be entering the 8th, 9th or 10th grade in August 2024. A one-page essay explaining their interest in field and why they want to attend must also be submitted by the student.

The academy will operate from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. each day. An award and pinning ceremony will be help on August 14, 2024. Upon completion of the program, all students will receive a uniform, shirt, stethoscope, backpack and blood pressure cuff.

The Southern West Virginia Junior Nursing Academy is sponsored by the West Virginia Center for Nursing, Raleigh General Hospital, Appalachian Regional Hospital, AirEvac, WVU Tech and the WVU School of Nursing.
