Juneteenth is a federal holiday. Are grocery and liquor stores closed? Here’s what to know

Juneteenth weekend is here, which means some Fort Worth city services and businesses will close up shop for the holiday on Monday.

In June 2021, President Joe Biden made Juneteenth on June 19 a federal holiday to commemorate the end of slavery. That makes it the newest federal holiday in the United States.

In Texas, along with a handful of other states, Juneteenth is a paid holiday for state employees. The holiday, originating in Texas, has been celebrated in the state since the 1860s and became an official state holiday in 1980.

Here’s what to know about what’s open and closed on Juneteenth.

What are these City of Fort Worth offices and services doing on Junteenth?

Most city offices, including City Hall, will be closed Monday, June 19, for the Juneteenth holiday. Emergency services will be available as usual, according to the city.

Trash: There will be no changes in garbage, recycle, yard waste or bulk collection schedules on June 19. Drop-off stations and the Environmental Collection Center will be closed. If you have questions or need assistance, call 817-392-1234.

Animal control: The Fort Worth Animal Shelter’s South Campus and North Campus will be closed to the public on June 19. PetSmart adoption locations at Alliance and Hulen will be open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Recreation: Community centers and Haws Athletic Center will be closed June 19. Marine Park Pool will be closed.

Water department: To access the Water Department’s automated system for payments and account inquiries or to report an emergency, call the 24-hour call center at 817-392-4477.

Public transportation: Trinity Metro will operate modified services on June 19. Trinity Metro bus and ACCESS paratransit services operate on Sunday schedules. TEXRail, TRE, ZIPZONE and The Dash will operate on regular schedules. The customer care kiosk is closed, but customer care phones at 817-215-8600 will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Trinity Metro administrative offices will be closed.

Fort Worth schools will be closed on Monday to celebrate Juneteenth.

Are Fort Worth banks and post offices open or closed on Junteenth?

Most banks, in accordance with the Federal Reserve’s holiday schedule, shut down for Juneteenth.

United States Postal Service offices will be closed on Juneteenth, while UPS and FedEx will remain open.

Are Fort Worth grocery and liquor stores open on Junteenth?

Most grocery stores, chain stores, big box stores, restaurants and malls are staying open on Monday, but some may close earlier than usual. Call local stores and restaurants ahead of time to confirm their holiday hours. Hours may vary by location.

Fort Worth Walmart stores will be open during normal business hours from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Monday and Target stores will operate under normal hours from 7 or 8 a.m. depending on the store to 10 p.m. Costco, Aldi and Kroger will also be open on Juneteenth.

Most liquor stores will be open on June 19. Spec’s Wines, Spirits & Finer Foods in Fort Worth will be open regular hours from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday.
