After presenting his spring men’s collection in book form, Junya Watanabe chose an installation and photo series to reveal his women’s offering. The installation, held at Comme des Garçons’ Tokyo offices, featured the collection styled on a room full of mannequins, with the series of model photographs displayed on screens in the corners.

Watanabe titled his latest women’s collection “The Spangles,” writing in his notes for the installation that “it is a collection that reproduces the costumes worn by the stars in my memories. My memories are monochrome, and I created a photo session with four fictional stars.”

The designer went for disco glam with a rocker edge, turning out patchwork poncho dresses with contrasting textures of satin, sequins and organdy. There were also sequined leggings and minidresses, long satin slip dresses, and motorcycle vests. For outerwear, Watanabe showed oversized, double-breasted blazers and a series of overcoats and trenchcoats in one layer of plain and one of sequined fabric. Every piece was solid black, white or silver.
