Jury Convicts Ex-Utah State Football Player of Raping 6 Women

A former Utah State University football player was convicted of raping multiple women while attending college, according to multiple outlets.

On Friday, a Cache County jury found 25-year-old Torrey Green guilty of five counts of rape, one count of object rape, one count of forcible sexual abuse and one count of misdemeanor sexual battery, the Salt Lake City Tribune, Deseret News and Harold Journal report.

Green was accused of sexually assaulting six women while a student at the Logan-based school from 2013 to 2015, according to the papers.

The case marks a cultural shift in believing victims of sexual assault, prosecutors said after the verdict was read.

“There were convictions for all six of these survivors,” Deputy Cache County Attorney Spencer Walsh said following the news, the Tribune reports. “We’re very happy about that. They were believed.”

Without DNA evidence, one victim not reporting the assault until years later and several women revealing they went home with Green willingly before he forced himself on them, the prosecution’s case relied heavily on the victims’ testimonies, the News reports.

All six women testified during trial, describing how Green sexually assaulted them despite their objections, the paper reports.

“It was grueling,” one unidentified juror described the 16-hour deliberation to the paper.

During his testimony, Green echoed his attorney’s claims that the women were scorned lovers and wanted attention, denying any wrongdoing and claiming that the sex was consensual, according to the Tribune.

“I wish I didn’t break their hearts,” Green said, the Tribune reports. “I could have done a better job of telling them and letting them know I didn’t want to be in a lasting relationship. I’m sorry for that.”

Cache County officials and Green’s attorney, Skye Lazaro, could not be reached by PEOPLE for comment Monday.

Green’s sentencing is set for March 27, according to the News.

“I hope this is a learning experience for everyone involved,” Walsh said outside the courthouse, the Journal reports. “That means citizens, friends, family members, law enforcement, prosecutors, everyone—we have got to do a better job of taking these sexual assault cases very seriously…start by believing, then do a competent, thorough investigation.”
