Jury duty scam making rounds in Calcasieu Parish

CALCASIEU PARISH, La. (KLFY) – A jury duty scam has been making the rounds in Calcasieu Parish.

According to the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office, victims have reported receiving a phone call saying they have missed jury duty and that there are fees associated with their absence. The caller may even claim to be a deputy with the Sheriff’s Office and use the name of a current CPSO deputy.

They then tell the victim to either purchase a prepaid card or make a payment using a Bitcoin kiosk to avoid being arrested.

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office will never ask for any form of payment in lieu of missing jury duty or for an active warrant. Here are are few tips to avoid becoming a victim of a scam:

  • Resist the pressure to make an immediate decision. Fraudsters create a sense of urgency to get you to act quickly

  • Verify the information before sending any money

  • Never send money based on a request made over the phone or in an email
