Jury finds one guilty of murder in 2019 Magnolia Park apartment shooting

A Richmond County jury recently found one man guilty and acquitted another in connection to a fatal 2019 shooting at the Magnolia Park apartment complex in Augusta.

The case was centered around the shooting death of 24-year-old Sanquan V. Sims, of Augusta, on May 23, 2019.

The jury last week found Tony M. Darby, 28, guilty of felony murder and possessing a gun during the crime. Judge Ashley Wright sentenced Darby to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus five years for the gun charge, according to Augusta District Attorney Jared Williams.

Darby was being tried with co-defendant Patrick Noble, 27, of Augusta, who was found not guilty. The pair were represented by separate public defenders, according to court records.

At about 5 p.m. on the day of the murder, Sims and Noble met at Magnolia Park Apartments on the 2000 block of Vandivere Road for a fistfight, according to previous reporting.

The fight stemmed from accusations that Sims sold Noble fake pain pills and he wanted his money back, which Sims refused to do. Darby shot Sims as a result of the conflict.

Sims was shot seven times, according to officials. His family has since moved out of the area because of threatening posts on Facebook.
