Just announced: Fine Japanese restaurant Momotaro is coming to Wedgewood-Houston

Upscale Japanese eatery Momotaro is coming to the Wedgewood-Houston neighborhood, according to an agreement between Nashville-based real estate company Adventurous Journeys (AJ) Capital Partners and Boka Restaurant Group.

AJ Capital Partners is currently overseeing the 21-acre restoration and development project set to house the eatery as well as a diverse group of office, residential and retail tenants.

The project, a renovation of the former sock factory May Hosiery Mills into a mixed-use center, has undergone several previous phases with Soho House Nashville’s February 2022 opening and New York City-born, French-style bistro Pastis’s pending arrival.

An opening date has yet to be announced for Pastis's or Momotaro, which has its first location in Chicago — one of the markets the chef-driven Boka Restaurant Group has restaurants based in. Other markets include Los Angeles, New York and, now, Nashville.

Besides Momotaro, Boka's portfolio includes Girl & the Goat, Swift & Sons, GT Prime, Alla Vita, Duck Duck Goat, Little Goat, GT Fish & Oyster, Swift & Sons Tavern, Boka Catering, Cira, Lazy Bird, Cabra, Café Basque and Laser Wolf Brooklyn.

Chefs Giuseppe Tentori, Stephanie Izard, Chris Pandel, Lee Wolen, Gene Kato, Daniel Rose and Michael Solomonov are partnered with Boka.

“The idea for Momotaro in Nashville has its foundation and roots from Momotaro Chicago, but we look forward to creating a restaurant that, in both design and menu, embraces Nashville's culture and amazing ingredients from its landscape,” Momotaro's Executive Chef Kato said.

Nashville's Momotaro will be designed by firm AvroKO, the James Beard Award winner for Best Restaurant Design.

The original Momotaro in Chicago’s Fulton Market neighborhood has a seasonal menu with creations by Kato, who pays tribute to authentic and traditional Japanese dishes while also putting innovative spins on the items. Live Prawn, Scallop Motoyaki, Alaskan King Crab and Yukimuro "Snow" Wagyu are menu standouts.

Nigrizushi, the chef's selected sushi, and Makimono or Sushi Rolls are also available.

Chicago’s Momotaro is also known for The Izakaya – its lower-level bar replicating Tokyo's Yokocho street scene.

Nashville's Momotaro is expected to open across from Soho House Nashville and Pastis, along Houston and Martin Streets.
