Just Musing: Longer days, a trip south, and downtown growth

Are you enjoying having a few more minutes of daylight compared to December when it was dark by 5 p.m.? In two weeks when Daylight Saving Time springs forward, we will gain an additional hour of daylight. I don’t know about you but, for me personally, I just feel better all the way around when we have more daylight. So just as a reminder, you can make a note to change your clocks one hour ahead at 2 a.m. on March 12.

The train derailment in East Palestine has made national news nearly every day. Actually, the explosion and burn off of chemicals could have long-term effects on all Ohio residents and even in neighboring Pennsylvania. Gov. DeWine has asked for federal relief and help but it appears to be met with closed ears and minds.

I am currently in Florida. I flew into Sanford, was met at the airport by longtime Marion friends and spent some time with them. I had reserved a rental car when I made my reservations, then learned upon arrival, there were no rentals available within 100 mile radius. According to an agent at rentals, all vehicles were out until after the Daytona 500. I’m so thankful for the friendship and hospitality of friends, Bob and Bev. A Uber would have been $200 to my destination and still no rental cars available in Central Florida. I now have wheels.

A side note about the Sanford airport — it is a smaller airport but very well marked with easy access into and out. Traffic is much less than Orlando and very accessible via I-4 to Orlando. I took the auto train from Lorton, Va., to Sanford a few times, also — a very convenient way to winter down south with your own vehicle.

On Wednesday, we turn the calendar to a new month and following soon will be March Madness. Unfortunately, the teams I usually follow are not doing so well this season.

It is exciting to see new businesses opening in downtown Marion. My hope is they will be well supported by local folks. I know from my own experience that it is easier to shop online but there is nothing like seeing and touching clothing and other items in person before purchasing. Good luck to all entrepreneurs.

Let me leave you with this quotation by the late Helen Keller: “A bend in the road is not the end of the road … unless you fail to make the turn.”

Until next week. Be safe.
