CHEBOYGAN — The deadline to file paperwork needed to have names of potential Cheboygan City Council candidates printed on the ballot for the November general election is 4 p.m. on July 26.

"Anyone running for the general election has to have their affidavit of identity and nominating petitions to me by July 26," said Cheboygan City Clerk Alyssa Singles. "They also have to file a Statement of Organization with the county clerk."

Those interested in running for one of the city council positions, or for city mayor, can pick up the affidavits and nominating petitions from the front desk of Cheboygan City Hall, during normal business hours, Monday through Friday.

Once this paperwork has been completed, with no less than 25, but no more than 50 signatures on the nominating petition documents, it can be returned to Singles.

In November, there will be three full term seats open on the Cheboygan City Council. These seats will be four-year terms, expiring in 2026, and are currently filled by city councilwomen Diane Mills and Mary Darling, and Cheboygan City Mayor Pro Tem Brett Mallory.

A partial term seat to fill the remainder of former councilman Kasey Hocquard's term, expiring in 2024, will also be on the ballot. This position is currently being filled by councilman Adam Bedwin, who was appointed to the position in late May, after Hocquard resigned.

Only two city council positions are not up for reelection this year, those currently filled by councilwoman Diane Raab and councilman Ken Kwiatkowski.

A full term for Cheboygan City Mayor will also be on the ballot in November, which will expire in 2024. The terms for mayor are two-year terms.

Singles said as of Wednesday morning, she has not had anyone else, other than current council members, pick up the affidavits of identity or nominating petitions.

"Mary Darling, Diane Mills, Brett Mallory and Mayor (Les) Tebo are all running again for their seats," said Singles.

Bedwin also picked up the paperwork from Singles, so she said she is sure he will be running to fill the seat for the rest of Hocquard's term. After the term expires in 2024, he will also be able to run again for a new term of office.

If anyone misses the deadline to file the paperwork for having their names on the ballot, they can still run as a write-in candidate. Paperwork to be a write-in candidate has to be filed with Singles by 4 p.m. on Oct. 28.

In order to be considered as a candidate for one of the city council or mayor positions, they must live within city limits. They also must not be in default with the city, meaning they are up to date and current on all property tax payments, as well as the payments to the City of Cheboygan for their water and sewer utility services.

There is not a limit on the number of people who can file their paperwork to be on the ballot to run for these positions.

If anyone has any questions regarding the required paperwork, or what they need to do to be on the ballot, they can call Singles at (231) 627-9931, or email her at asingles@cheboygan.org.
