This Was Just Rated the Top Sunscreen for the 5th Year in a Row
There are quite a few things to keep in mind when selecting a sunscreen. It can become overwhelming (and a little scary) if you start down the rabbit hole of side-by-side comparisons. That’s why we anxiously await the annual release of a few best-of SPF lists that help us whittle through the noise and discover what’s really top in class. So, when Consumer Reports recently released their 2019 Annual Sunscreen Report we certainly took notice.
What’s interesting about this list is that it’s not all about the newest and shiniest (we mean this both literally and figuratively, thanks to the recent glitter sunscreen trend that has us shaking our heads) but more so about products that really work. Can we get an amen to that? As such, the ratings authority had no qualms bestowing the honor of top spot to La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Melt-In Sunscreen Milk—for the fifth time in a row.
Before determining the rankings, Consumer Reports tested more than 80 sunscreens including lotions, sprays, balms, and those handy SPF sticks. Of the products tested, 32 were revealed to have an SPF number of less than half of what was listed on their bottle. As in, some bottles that claimed to be SPF 30 actually tested with an SPF lower than 15. Yikes. It seems our fear of misleading SPF purchases is well-founded.
La Roche-Posay was kind enough to send us a bottle of their award-winning SPF and we quickly learned why it’s a winner thanks to its easy application and lack of the chalky—or conversely, sticky—residue left behind by many other brands. The slightly sunscreen-smelling lotion truly does melt in like a dream without necessitating a 10-minute blending time. Needless to say, it gets our vote for the not-so-important categories of fragrance and application—we’ll leave the sun tests to the derms and qualified experts at Consumer Reports.

Anthelios 60 Melt-in Sunscreen Milk is pricier than many of the options you’ll see lining your drugstore aisles, but we’re mighty inclined to throw caution (read: our wallets) to the wind for the sake of sun safety.
