“You just shot my dog!” Family pet killed by Ohio police officer

An Ohio police officer shot and killed a family’s dog while responding to a domestic violence call last week.

Canton police officers were called Thursday to help break up a family fight, according to WJW in Cleveland.

“I need the police down here... right now... because if you’re not, you’re gonna be calling the coroner,” a 911 caller told police dispatchers in a call obtained by WOIO in Cleveland.

The caller said he was in a fight with his son-in-law.

When officers arrived, a woman and her three children were standing in the front yard with a dog. Body camera video obtained by WOIO and WJW showed multiple officers telling the woman to take the dog inside.

The video then showed the dog, a Cane Corso named Bella, running in the direction of an officer. It was then that an officer fired three shots at the dog.

“You just shot my dog,” the woman cried out, according to WOIO.

The officer said in an incident report that he felt threatened by the dog at that moment, WJW reported.

The officers attempted to treat the dog, but it died from its injuries.

Canton Police Chief John Gabbard told WJW that the incident was under review by their department’s Office of Professional Standards.

“Unfortunately, police officers frequently have to respond to unpredictable, volatile situations and address threats of all kinds in order to preserve public safety. I have viewed the video and find it heartbreaking. The fact that these difficult situations are inherent in the nature of police work makes them no less devastating to everyone involved, including the officers,” Gabbard said.
