‘Just a special child;’ 5-year-old asks for humane society donations instead of birthday presents

Helping others is what a five-year-old child wanted for her birthday.

News Center 7′s Kayla McDermott talked with the little girl whose party invitations asked guests to bring donations to help animals.

At only four, Jemma Frazier was asked if she really needed anything.

“She’s like ‘Hmmm no,’” said Anita Kitchen, who cares for Jemma. “I said ‘Would you like to donate to Toys for Tots or the humane society?’”

Kitchen explained what the Humane Society of Greater Dayton does, then the choice was made.

So the pair sent invitations asking guests to bring items to help animals at the shelter and her friends delivered.

“We got all kinds of cat toys and dog toys and dog food and cat food,” Kitchen said.

Frazier and Anita dropped off all the donations to the society.

“Their front lobby has a bunch of chairs it was entirely filled,” Kitchen said.

Kitchen said the society was surprised a child as young as Frazier would be so thoughtful.

“Jemma is just a special child, she’s full of life but she’s also very empathetic for her age,” Kitchen said.

The Humane Society said they were so grateful for the donations, and people can still make a donation in Fraizer’s name here.
