'Just in Time': Christmas Island's Red Crabs Make Christmas Eve Return

As millions of people traveled home for the holidays on December 24, so too did millions of baby red crabs who returned to the shores on Australia’s Christmas Island after a month in the ocean, according to Jill McKendrick who shot this video.

McKendrick, a resident of Christmas Island, told Storyful the baby crabs had hatched from eggs that millions of adult crabs released into the sea about a month beforehand,

“The babies have spent the last month hanging out in the ocean, avoiding whale sharks. Today on Christmas Eve, the first of the babies made it back to the island. Just in time for Christmas on Christmas Island,” McKendrick said. Credit: Jill McKendrick via Storyful
