Just in time for summer! A Mississippi Coast waterpark expands with new slides and more
Summer is heating up at Buccaneer Bay Waterpark in Waveland, with the added fun of the new Splash Island with its slides, tipping buckets and pirate tower.
A ribbon cutting for the new attraction overlooking the beach is at 10 a.m. Friday to give the community a first look.
The water park is getting the finishing touches and opens for the summer May 27, in time for Memorial Day Weekend. It will be open daily through Labor Day.
“We’re looking for employees and training lifeguards,” said Stu Rayburn, director of Buccaneer State Park.
The 4.5-acre waterpark already had a large wave pool with eight wave patterns, water slides, Smuggler’s Cover water playground and a food court.
The centerpiece of this expansion is a 20 foot climbing tower and pirate ship, he said.
The new area has 5,000 square feet of pools, three new water slides, 26 interactive spray features and two giant tipping buckets, Rayburn said. Six cabana rentals are available for those who want to escape the sun or have a private place for kids to nap.
This waterpark expansion follows the addition of new campsites that debuted in December at Buccaneer State Park. Now visitors can stay in their RV or pitch their own tent. Or they can glamp under the stars in one of the Tentrr outfitted campsites complete with a propane heater and memory foam mattress. The campsites accommodate up to six people, or a double up to 12.
Buccaneer State Park also has a nature trail, playground, 18-hole disc golf course and pavilions for family picnics and parties.
