Justice Department requires Tidewater Community College’s Virginia Beach campus to improve disabled student access

Tidewater Community College’s Virginia Beach campus has agreed to improve access for students and faculty with physical disabilities as part of a settlement the school recently reached with the U.S. Department of Justice.

The agreement was announced last month in a news release from the department.

It requires the school to remove any barriers that prevent students from accessing facilities and recreational areas and ensure it fully complies with provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Department officials interviewed disabled students and staff at the college and received complaints — mostly about inaccessible sidewalks, doorways and desks, according to a settlement document attached to the release.

A spokesperson for the Justice Department didn’t return a message Friday requesting more information, nor did a spokesperson for the community college.
