Friday night, Justin Bieber returns to Target Center for his first local concert in nearly six years. And plenty has changed for the Ontario native during his transition from teen heartthrob into a full-stop adult global star.

When Bieber, who is now 28, last played the Minneapolis basketball arena, he was in the midst of a carefully crafted and remarkably successful comeback.

He first emerged in 2009 and took the nation’s young-and-female population by storm. His second album, 2012’s “Believe,” proved he was no flash in the pan. The massive tour behind it took in $210 million at the box office with 155 shows in more than 40 countries.

Flush with cash, Bieber spent much of 2013 and 2014 in the headlines, not for his music but for a series of controversies. He was arrested several times, a handful of naked photos hit the internet (prompting Bieber’s father to cringingly tweet “What do you feed that thing? #prouddaddy”), videos emerged showing him using a racial slur and he abandoned his pet monkey at a tour stop in Germany. In response, more than 270,000 people signed a petition urging the White House to deport Bieber.

That all made his 2015 comeback such a surprise. He returned to the charts with “Where Are U Now,” “What Do You Mean,” “Love Yourself” and “Sorry” (in which he apologized to his ex Selena Gomez, not for being a rich young creep). The tour for his third album “Purpose” drew some 2.8 million fans to shows on six continents.

Here’s a look at five ways Bieber’s life has changed since we last saw him.

He buckled under pressure

Just two weeks into his “Purpose” tour, he canceled all VIP meet-and-greet sessions – which cost fans up to $2,000 to attend – citing emotional exhaustion. Bieber also canceled the final 14 shows of the tour, six of which were stadium shows, including a stop at U.S. Bank Stadium. He said it was due to extreme exhaustion. Reports at the time suggested he was “increasingly listless” onstage.

He got married

After a series of high-profile relationships, Bieber walked down the aisle with model Hailey Baldwin (daughter of Stephen and niece of Alec) in September 2019. That spring, Baldwin gushed about Bieber in an Instagram post: “You are an incredible man, you make me a better human being, you make me happier than I’ve ever been. Insanely proud of who you are and who you’re becoming.”

He found religion

To be clear, Bieber has always described himself as a Christian and, in 2014, he was baptized by Pentecostal pastor Carl Lentz of the controversial Hillsong Church. But in recent years, he’s become much more outspoken about his beliefs and has given much of the credit to his wife. In a 2021 Instagram post, he reflected on his first arrest: “Not proud of where I was at in my life. I was hurting, unhappy, confused, angry, mislead, misunderstood and angry at God … All this to say God has brought me a long way. From then til now I do realize something. God was as close to me then as he is right now.”

He collaborated with everybody

While he often featured rappers on his earlier hits, Bieber’s recent singles have featured a wide variety of guests, including Ed Sheeran, Billie Eilish, Dan + Shay, Ariana Grande, Chance the Rapper, Benny Blanco and Shawn Mendes.

He got his own doughnut

Well, technically, it was a Tim Hortons doughnut hole and it was available in three flavors Bieber supposedly created himself: chocolate white fudge, sour cream chocolate chip and birthday cake waffle. The limited-edition treats helped the Canadian chain emerge from a pandemic slow-down in business. Tim Hortons’ parent company said sales rose 10.3 percent in the fourth quarter of 2021, compared to an 11 percent decline a year earlier. In a call with analysts, CEO Jose Cil said the collaboration “outperformed our internal expectations” and led to “unprecedented social engagement and increased appeal with younger guests … I’m a Belieber.”
