A 13-year-old was killed on his scooter after being hit by a car in Broward, deputies say
A Broward teen was killed while riding a scooter in Broward County on Thursday, according to deputies.
Just before 5 p.m., a 13-year-old boy was riding a stand-up electric scooter against traffic on West McNab Road in North Lauderdale, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.
Sarah Vieira, 27, was driving her Mercedes-Benz sedan on the same road, but didn’t realize the scooter was heading toward her until he was right in front of her, deputies said.
“The driver attempted to avoid the crash but the juvenile rode into the front passenger side of the Mercedes and was projected eastbound, coming to rest in the center thru lane,” the sheriff’s office said in a release.
Deputies found the injured boy when they responded to the crash. He was taken to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead.
Vieira stayed at the scene as traffic homicide detectives investigated. The sheriff’s office said neither excessive speed nor impairment were factors in the crash.
In early March, 16-year-old Anthony Malec died after being hit by a Tesla while riding his scooter outside of his school in Cooper City. He was not in a designated crosswalk.
