Juvenile offenders caught after escaping, carjacking while in transit to Cabarrus detention center

CONCORD, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The two juvenile offenders who escaped while being transported to the Cabarrus Juvenile Detention Center Thursday afternoon were caught following a crash with Charlotte police, authorities say.

According to the N.C. Department of Public Safety, the juveniles identified as Joshua O. and Jeremiah W. escaped at 1:05 p.m. April 11 near the School House Commons shopping center in Harrisburg, off N.C. 49.

Deputies with the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office said one of the juveniles was able to force the transport vehicle door open. Both of them reportedly fled on foot toward the Lowes Foods gas pumps where they forcibly removed a female from her vehicle, stole it, and fled the scene.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say the escapees were apprehended after colliding with one of their vehicles Thursday evening following a brief pursuit on Brookshire Freeway near Beatties Ford Road. No injuries were reported.

Sheriff’s office investigators have the juveniles’ identities; however, they are currently seeking the stolen vehicle. It is described as a grey 2019 Toyota Rav-4, with N.C. license plate THC-9542.

The vehicle was located near Idlewild Road in east Charlotte but abandoned. The pending charges are unknown at this time.

Officials say they have a “high degree” of concern for the safety of both the juvenile and the public. The escapees allegedly exhibited assaultive behavior during the escape and/or a prior history of unpredictable behavior.

The local juvenile detention center is on McWhorter Road in Concord.

Members of the public should report sightings of the escapees to law enforcement officials.
