UPDATE: Second girl dies in Northampton County crash: state police

UPDATE: A 15-year-old girl has succumbed to her injuries sustained in a three-vehicle crash Jan. 28 in Northampton County.

Virginia State Police said in an update late Sunday that the girl, who was a backseat passenger in a Toyota Yaris, succumbed to her injuries at the Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters.

A three-vehicle crash in Northampton County left one juvenile dead and another with serious, life-threatening injuries, Virginia State Police said Friday.

The incident occurred at about 7:24 a.m. Friday, Jan. 28, at 9108 Lankford Highway.

A Northampton school bus was stopped in the left lanes of Route 13 south with its safety lights flashing and its stop sign deployed, according to preliminary state police investigations. A 2016 GMC Sierra stopped adjacent to the school bus in the right lane along with a 2007 Toyota Yaris. As the vehicles were stopped/yielding to the school bus, the driver of a 2006 Ford F250, Joseph M. Castiglia, struck the Toyota in the rear, pushing it into the GMC, state police said in a news release Friday.

The initial impact caused massive damage to the Toyota sedan, killing the 12-year-old female seated in the back seat, police said. A 13-year-old female, also seated in the back seat, suffered serious life-threatening injuries and was transported to the Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughter in Norfolk, Virginia, the release states.

The driver of the Toyota, Nayda vazquez Negron, 33, and a front seat female passenger, age 15, both suffered non-life threatening injuries and were transported from the scene, police said.

Castiglia and the driver of the GMC were not injured, according to police.

The investigation is ongoing and the roadway was reopened.
