A Franklin police K-9 was killed Saturday in a crash in Warren County, Ohio State Highway Patrol officials said.

The crash happened around 10:40 a.m. on South River Street in Franklin, Ohio, a city of around 11,600 residents in northwest Warren County.

Two Franklin police officers were on regular patrol with Fury, their K-9 partner, and driving southwest on South River Street near West Seventh Street when the driver of a 2015 Jeep Patriot struck the officers' marked cruiser.

The driver, 21-year-old Michael Sims of Nicholasville, Kentucky, started traveling the wrong way at a high rate of speed on South River Street before hitting the cruiser, officials said in a news release. His Jeep then veered off the road and struck a tree before coming to a stop.

Fury was taken to a local animal hospital where he died from his injuries. The two police officers suffered minor injuries and were taken to Kettering Health Franklin.

Sims also suffered minor injuries and was take to Atrium Hospital, officials said, adding that once released, he'll be booked into the Warren County jail on charges of felonious assault of a police officer and felonious assault of a police dog.

The crash remains under investigation and Sims may face additional charges.
