K-pop soloist Choi Yena’s recently released music video “Hate Rodrigo” was set to private on Thursday following an online backlash.

About the release: The music video is part of the 23-year-old singer and actor's second single album “Hate XX” and features (G)I-DLE member Yuqi on the song. ‘Hate XX’ comes with the B-sides “Bad Hobby” and “Wicked Love.” The album is Yena’s latest release following the single “Love War” back in January.

The controversy: The song title of “Hate Rodrigo” quickly drew speculation that it was a diss track towards singer-songwriter and “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” star Olivia Rodrigo.

Moreover, the music video itself contains actual images of Rodrigo herself and is chock full of references to Rodrigo’s own music videos.

Yena explains: Yena is credited as a lyricist and co-composer of the song. During her recent guest appearance on “TheKstarNextDoor,” she clarified her intentions behind the song.

Contrary to its literal meaning, Yena revealed that she actually loves Rodrigo but wanted to convey a sense of jealousy towards her success. She explained that the phrase "hate her" was chosen to represent feelings of envy rather than genuine hatred.

Private videos and #HateRodrigo: Despite the explanation, the music video for “Hate Rodrigo” has been privated on YouTube, and numerous TikTok videos featuring the song have been deleted.

According to a report from Xports News on Thursday, Yena's agency, Yuehua Entertainment, responded to a request from Rodrigo's team to make the music video private due to the controversy and potential copyright issues. Netizens also noticed the removal of many of Yena's TikTok videos, particularly those utilizing the hashtag #Hate_Rodrigo.

Yena’s release of the song coincides with Rodrigo’s own announcement about the arrival of her sophomore album “Guts” in September.
