Recap: Ty Zentner's 31-yard field goal lifts K-State over TCU in overtime for Big 12 title

ARLINGTON, Texas — Kansas State hands TCU its first loss and winds the Big 12 championship on a 31-yard Ty Zentner field goal.

Ty Zentner kicks game-winning field goal in overtime

After getting a fourth-down stop at the goal line, Kansas State got the ball and Ty Zentner remained perfect on the season by kicking a 31-yard field goal to give the Wildcats a 31-28 overtime victory over TCU.

The Wildcats improved to 10-3 with the victory and TCU fell to 12-1.

Overtime coming up, tied at 28

After forcing a Kansas State punt, which the Wildcats downed at the 6-yard line, TCU opts to run out the clock and take its chances in overtime. We're tied at 28-28.

Max Duggan puts TCU on his back

TCU quarterback Max Duggan takes over, running on just about every play as the Horned Frogs come back to tie it with 1:51 left. Duggan ran 8 yards for the touchdown, then found Jared Wiley for the two-point conversion.

It's a one-possession game

After converting one fourth down, TCU elects to kick a 42-yard Griffin Kell field goal with 7:34 left to make it a one-possession game, cutting the K-State lead to 28-20.

Redemption for Julius Brents and K-State cashes in

After being burned on an end zone pass interference call late in the third quarter, Julius Brents starts the fourth with an interception in the opposite end zone to give K-State the ball.

Six plays later, Deuce Vaughn displays some magic with a 44-yard touchdown run to give the Wildcats a 28-17 lead with 11:27 left.

Kansas State hanging on to lead after three

Kansas State takes a 21-16 lead to the fourth quarter, but TCU is threatening with a third down at 5 at the Wildcat 8 when we resume.

Attendance today is 69,335, the largest crowd for the Big 12 championship game since 2018.

Turnover costly for Wildcats

Kansas State's defense forced a punt after its touchdown when Felix Anudike-Uzomah sacked Max Duggan, but the celebration didn't last long.

Wildcat return man Phillip Brooks muffed a fair catch and TCU recovered at the K-State 30. Three plays later, the Horned Frogs were in the end zone on a 6-yard Kendre Miller run, cutting the lead to 21-17.

The score was set up by a 21-yard completion from Duggan to Trent Battie.

Another quick score for Kansas State

Kansas State got a defensive stop to start the second half and quickly drove 62 yards for a touchdown, with Will Howard finding RJ Garcia in the end zone for 25 yards.

The four-play drive was set up by a 26-yard completion from Howard to tight end Ben Sinnott.

The Wildcats thought they had a safety on the previous possession, but it was ruled an incomplete pass.

Horned Frogs score late in half to into K-State lead

TCU got a 42-yard Griffin Kell field goal with 29 seconds left in the first half to cut Kansas State's lead to 14-10 at the break.

The scoring drive covered 56 yards in eight plays.

TCU has the edge in total offense, 228 yards to 191 for K-State. The Wildcats have 101 yards on the ground, led by Malik Knowles with 48 and Deuce Vaughn with 40.

Will Howard is 9 of 17 passing for 90 yards, with one going to Knowles for 40 yards.

Max Duggan is 11 of 20 passing for 148 yards for TCU, with Quentin Johnson catching three for 88 yards. Kendre Miller has 45 yards rushing on seven carries.

K-State strikes quickly to grab the lead

Kansas State got the ball in good field position at its own 41 after forcing a punt from deep in TCU territory and made the Frogs pay.

It took just three plays — a 40-yard Malik Knowles run on a jet sweep, an 18-yard completion to Deuce Vaughn and a 1-yard touchdown run by Will Howard. Three plays, 49 yards, 49 seconds.

Wildcats lead 14-7 with 10:16 left in the half.

K-State and TCU tied at 7-7 after one

Kansas State and TCU go to the second quarter, tied 7-7, after the Wildcats scored with 15 seconds left in the period.

K-State gets even with fourth-down score

Kansas State gets a big fourth-down conversion to get on the board as Will Howard rolls to his left and finds tight end Ben Sinnott for 6 yards. Ty Zentner's extra point ties it with 15 seconds left in the first quarter.

Much as TCU set up its first score with a long pass play, Kansas State got a 40-yard completion from Will Howard to Malik Knowles to get to the red zone. The scoring drive covered 63 yards in 13 plays.

TCU strikes first with long drive

After stopping K-State to start the game, TCU drives 92 yards in 13 plays and takes 6:57 off the clock to go up 7-0 on a 1-yard touchdown pass from Max Duggan to Taye Barber on first-and-goal.

The big play of the drive was a 53-yard completion from Duggan to Quentin Johnston that got the Horned Frogs out of the shadow of their own end zone.

TCU wins the coin toss

Kansas State quarterback Adrian Martinez, who is not suited up, makes the call on the coin toss and calls tails. It's heads and TCU defers. Wildcats will get the ball first.

Ashanti in the house

At the end of a rousing rendition of the national anthem by Ashanti, K-State fans finished it off with "and the home of the CHIEFS."

Ready for some football

AT&T Stadium is full of purple, naturally, as Kansas State takes the field first, followed by TCU, for the Big 12 championship game. Getting ready for the coin toss.
