K Street shooting suspect Mtula Payton appears in court for first time

One of the suspected gunmen in the K Street gang-related shooting in April appeared in court for the first time Thursday afternoon. The downtown Sacramento shooting killed 6 people and injured 12 others. Mtula Payton, 28, is the third suspect to be arraigned on several murder charges. Brothers Smiley and Dandrae Martin appeared in court in May. All three men are charged with the murders of Johntaya Alexander, Melinda Davis and Yamile Martinez. Payton also faces firearm charges related to being a felon in possession of a handgun and also has previous felony convictions, Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert said at a May 3 press conference. Payton also has enhancements to his charges for committing crimes while out on bail.
