K9 shot in the line of duty to officially retire, Gwinnett County officials say

The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners voted to approve the retirement for a K9 shot in the line of duty.

During a meeting Tuesday, commissioners gave their approval for Gwinnett County K9 Kai, a three-year-old Belgian Malinois, to retire from service and live with his handler, Cpl. Aaron Carlyle, for the remainder of his life.

Before he retired, Kai was recovering after being shot twice in the line of duty on May 23, 2022, in a stand-off in Gwinnett County.

In July 2022, the Georgia K9 foundation said Kai had been through a lot during the recovery process, but they decided after careful consideration, his leg needed to be amputated.

In November 2022, Kai was awarded the Purple Heart by the Gwinnett Police Department to honor him for his sacrifice while in the line of duty.

Since joining the department in August 2021, Kai had responded to 43 calls for service, located six suspects and seven articles of evidence in addition to numerous successful drug busts.
