These troops, referred to colloquially as Kadyrovites, have a reputation for an especially callous disregard for human rights and civilian lives.

According to the NRC, Kadyrovite members of the Russian special forces unit Akhmat have deployed equipment and weapons within the turbine halls of reactors No. 1 and 2 – the nuclear plant, the largest on the European continent, has six in total.

The Russian invaders are also constantly strengthening security at the occupied plant, and are believed to have increased their garrison numbers.

Russian forces have been continuously using the territory of the ZNPP to shell Ukrainian targets, while Ukraine is unable to respond, due to the risk of causing a nuclear calamity. According to Ukrainian nuclear operator Enerhoatom, the Russian invaders have placed at least 14 units of heavy military equipment with ammunition, weapons, and explosives in the engine room of reactor No. 1. In total, over 40 units of Russian military equipment has been deployed in or around the ZNPP.
